Masaya Volcano, Nicaragua
Masaya is situated near Granada and near the city you can find this spectacular volcano, one of the many still active in Nicaragua. The smell of sulfur was very intense, and there were signs advising to park your car facing the exit and not to stay more than 10 minutes too close to the crater.
After facing one of the worst hurricanes in the last years and leaving away a dictatorship (although he has come back to power in democratic elections) Nicaragua is still fighting to get away from poverty. However, all of this suffering has made its citizens very though and friendly people who are willing to work hard to obtain a decent middle class that allows them to live a better life.
